Jumpgate: Evolution - hands-on Space is your oyster in this refreshingly non-RPG MMO

During our hands-on play with Jumpgate Evolution at Codemasters’ Gamers Day 2009, I thought to myself how much I enjoyed playing Colony Wars on the PlayStation. How simple it was to journey through space and engage in dog-fights (not the illegal kind) with enemy ships, the sense of achievement felt when completing a mission. A lot of that nostalgia came back to me when playing Jumpgate Evolution.

When we sat down with Jumpgate, we picked our pilot and chose from the one ship available to us. From then on we were offered missions to tackle, which were divided by rank. After picking our very first mission we approached Jumpgate in traditional MMO fashion, one hand on the WASD keys on the keyboard and the other hand on the mouse. Surprisingly, steering your ship was controlled entirely by the mouse and pressing the shift key to travel faster. Locking onto enemy ships is mapped to the left click on the mouse and shooting is mapped to the right. Once locked onto an enemy ship, you can easily aim with the mouse and gun down that bastard. It all happened really slowly since only a standard turret was available on our ship (a missile or two would’ve helped), but it was nonetheless satisfying to destroy other ships.

After gunning down six enemy ships, we advanced to rank 2. Most missions consisted of destroying enemy ships, but as simple as that sounds, it is probably the most intense aspect of the game. Dog-fights (take those illegal thoughts out of your mind!) are handled with ease. When an enemy speeds across the screen and out of your line of view, an arrow indicator appears to show you in what direction you should point your ship. Getting close enough and engaging is good fun, but gaining the experience to climb the ranks and get more access to better ships is incentive enough to keep accepting missions.

Unfortunately, our hands on was purely Player vs Environment as everyone around us was enjoying the game for themselves or just plain scared to face my ship. Jumpgate promises to deliver epic Player vs Player battles, but sadly we didn’t experience any of that. The prospect of teaming up with a guild to take down a huge star destroyer like ship has us gritting our teeth.

Guitar Hero : Metallica

Thatvideogameblog reports, "Pre-orders are always a hit and miss affair for me. In this day and age of everyone under the sun selling videogames it never seems to be entirely necessary to pre-order a game. However, game stores and companies like when we do it because it gives them money without handing anything over. Thus prompting us to pre-order is in their favor. In this vein Activision has announced that Guitar Hero: Metallica will get three separate pre-order goodies depending on where you get the game from. GameStops across the country will be bestowing pre-orderers with an entire extra kick-pedal for their drums sets, which is frickin awesome. No less awesome is receiving Metallica drumsticks from Hollywood Video or GameCrazy. Equally no less awesome is the tattoo sleeve you'll get from Best Buy… wait a minute. Tattoo sleeve? That is not awesome or very heavy metal at all. In fact I would argue that a tattoo sleeve is the antithesis of Metallica. If the two came into contact the world would literally explode. So for the sake of humanity, pre-order far away from Best Buy. Also, that image above is the box art - or part of it. See the rest below, and yes, it looks the same for all three systems."

Grand Theft Auto IV

Rockstar's opus takes the top prize from retailer trade group; World at War and Wii Fit garner three awards each. Award season in the gaming industry isn't over just year. The Entertainment Merchants Association today announced its Video Game Home Entertainment Awards, with Rockstar Games' Grand Theft AutoIV taking home the retailer trade group's Game of the Year honors. The blood-spattered immigrant tale also claimed the Action/Adventure Game of the Year category, but was bested by a pair of games in terms of award quantity. Nintendo's Wii Fit earned three awards from the retailer group--Most Innovative Game of the Year, Wii Game of the Year, and Casual Game of the Year. Meanwhile, Activision's Call of Duty: World at War took home its own trio of honors as the PlayStation 3 Game of the Year, Xbox 360 Game of the Year, and Military/Shooter Game of the Year.

PSP2 Consept???

Take this for what you will, but PSPworld has it from an "anonymous source" that the next version of Sony's PSP (the PSP2, if you will, or perhaps it'll be the PSPtwo?) will feature a new video chat service via a tiny integrated camera which will allow users to stream live video to the PlayStation 3 via WiFi before linking up with that
HUB Playstation service. The off-the-shelf video camera is said to be located directly below the PSP's screen (where the logo is currently) and presumably of the Motion eye variety already available in some Sony Ericsson phones and Vaio laptops. Oh, and that 8GB of NAND storage rumor -- not gonna happen according to this source. It'll still be NAND but of the 4GB variety instead. We should also see about 1/4-inch whittled off the current PSP choice of black, white, and silver. We're not in a position to vouch or validify any of these rumors, however, so if it doesn't happen, not our deal (but if it turns out to be true, you heard it here first -- hopefully)!

PS3, things you don't know about it

How well do you really know the PS3?
As you know, when you buy a PS3, there are many, many options and things to do on it. They only problem is while you try some of the many options available you miss some other key components to optimize your PS3 experience.

There are things I didn't know and still don't know about the PS3. For instance, how many of us had a PS2 before the PS3? Probably a lot, but what scared me when I opened the box was that there was no memory slot to get all your old games back! I was scared at first but then a friend told me how to solve the problem.

The solution I found was a little thing called a PS3-PS2 memory card adaptor. It is a small device you can plug a memory card into that has a USB plug at the end. I got one off my friend and in 5 minutes all my old games were back, and forever saved on the PS3!

The PS3-PS2 memory card adaptor usually runs from about $10-15 nowadays but can be found in used bins for less. There are quite a few useful tools for the PS3 out their even though their are a huge amount already installed.

Apart from the just the PS2 memory adaptor trick there is a huge selection of things on the PS3 most people don't know about, or notice. Most of the stuff you miss is simply the fact that much bigger toys are in the way. Of course with the PS3's huge option base there is a large number of things you can mess up or get glitched on.
